July 4th, 1776. Brave men penned a document – actually on July 2nd – which would set in motion a free country henceforth known as the United States of America. The new nation’s army would still have to fight a war to win that freedom from Great Britain’s king. And would do so again and again. The country would endure many more attacks on its freedom in the 239 years which followed.  That freedom would be attacked from both the outside and within, and still is.

The news leading up to the Independence Day holiday is that the nation may be the target of more terrorist attacks which exploit Americans peaceably assembling at parades, picnics and other public events.  Law enforcement is said to be on high alert.  Terrorists are on the rampage in both the middle east and Europe and have little standing between them and breaching our porous borders.

But Americans don’t retreat when threatened.  They’re vigilant in their determination to live as free people not cowering under threats, wherever they come from. The founding fathers knew this and lived this more than we can ever imagine.

Enjoy the 240th birthday of the greatest and most free republic the planet has known.  And be prepared to fight to keep it free.
