Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is doing his job quietly and the media that enabled John Kerry and Hillary Clinton to be attention whores doesn’t like it.  His first trip to Asia was a low-impact press affair.  He traveled light where the media was concerned and went about his business seriously – in a part of the world where the geopolitical stakes are second to none in terms of danger.

Contrast that with his predecessors John Kerry and Hillary Clinton, who lived for the staged photo ops and diversions and distractions that made them seem more hands on than they really were. Kerry in the goofy hazmat suit.  Kerry on his bike, breaking his leg in France and thus causing the cancellation of a big diplomatic swing through Europe.  Hillary Clinton’s Russian “reset”  button which was more of a green light for the Russians to intimidate and trample over some former Soviet states.  The phony photo op at the arrival of the caskets of Americans who died in Benghazi – Hillary’s laughable indictment of a YouTube video and promise to “get the guy” responsible for the video.  The loopy antics of Marie Harf and Jen Psaki, spokesholes who spoke incoherently and carried big hashtags.  The U.S State Department dogged developing nations not about ending poverty but about LGBTQ rights.

After John Kerry’s insufferable bloviation and Hillary Clinton’s worthless miles circling the globe, the world is a mode dangerous place.  ISI grew 4,440% on Obama’s watch.  Putin hacked and slashed his way into American cyberspace and across eastern Europe.  The Iranian program to develop nuclear weapons was excused and even supersized.  And, of course, North Korea is more muscular and threatening than ever with its missile and nuclear warhead development.  All while John Kerry talked forever and about everything but gave no information and produced nothing of substance diplomatically.  While Hillary Clinton racked up frequent flier miles and filled the Clinton Foundation till with donations from the leaders of almost every oppressive nation on the planet.

Here’s what Tillerson told the sole journalist, from IJR, to accompany him to Asia,

“First and foremost is what is my mission and why am I going? How can I best accomplish that mission? What’s the most effective way for me to do that?” the secretary said.

“I’m not a big media press access person. I personally don’t need it. … When we’re ready to talk about what we’re trying to do, I will be available to talk to people. But doing daily availability, I don’t have this appetite or hunger to be that.”

He added: “When I have something important and useful to say, I know where everybody is and I know how to go out there and say it.”

Nothing says serious diplomacy like inviting James Taylor to sing at a Paris terror summit.

John Kerry and Hillary Clinton had a knack for bragging about accomplishing nothing.  The press ate that up.  Now that Tillerson has shown himself not to be the attention whore Kerry and Clinton were, the media labels his efforts as “rocky,”  It’s not because he lacks diplomatic seriousness, but because the media can’t follow him. Undaunted, the media makes up fake news nonetheless.
